1. Have you established a strong, clear argument in your introduction?
2. Do you 'signpost' each paragraph with connectives or discourse markers and topic sentence?
3. Do you get to grips with the text quickly, without re-telling the story?
4. Do you include integrated quotations in every paragraph?
5. Does each paragraph help to support your controlling argument?
6. Do you comment at some point on language, structure AND form?
7. Do you include a good deal of analysis in every paragraph - looking beyond the obvious and discussing alternative readings?
8. Have you presented your essay in an appealing way, underlining the title, including your name and date, paragraphing clearly, putting titles in single quotation marks and using capital letters correctly?
9. Have you used appropriately formal language for the task?
10. If you refer to any websites, books, etc that you used for research, have you included them in a bibliography at the end of your essay?
